Sofia M. Hernandez is a graduate of Seattle University (B.A. 2006, summa cum laude) and Duke University School of Law (J.D. 2009); and she has additional legal studies at the Universidad Austral in Buenos Aires, Argentina and served as clerk for the Hon. Jose Fuste in the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico. Ms. Hernandez is admitted to practice law in North Carolina and Washington. Prior to joining Olive & Olive, she gained valuable and varied experience as an IP legal specialist with Red Hat, Inc. and as an associate with K&L Gates, LLP in the commercial litigation and intellectual property litigation groups. Among other matters, she has experience handling a wide variety of intellectual property disputes and agreements, including but not limited to trademark and domain name disputes and litigation, ICANN proceedings, Digital Millennium Copyright Act complaints, copyright infringement disputes and litigation, copyright and trademark licensing agreements, and managing intellectual property portfolios. Ms. Hernandez enjoys working with clients to help them protect and monitor their intellectual property. At Olive & Olive, Ms. Hernandez advises clients with respect to trademark clearance and licensing and with their intellectual property disputes. She regularly represents clients before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, and when necessary can appear before the U.S. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. She also is part of our trial team working on lawsuits pending in the various federal district courts and occasionally in state court. Ms. Hernandez is particularly interested in the laws and regulations surrounding intellectual property and the internet. Ms. Hernandez is fluent in Spanish. She is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association and its Intellectual Property Section as well as the Young Lawyers Division of the Durham County Bar Association. She enjoys being involved in the community and supporting local businesses.
